HUJI – International Impact
Producing unparalleled excellence in research, teaching, and study, the Hebrew University’s world-renowned scholars have achieved extraordinary breakthroughs in disciplines ranging from agriculture to brain research, from economics to education, and so many more. These accomplishments are reflected in the impressive number of competitive research grants obtained by its faculty, as well as by the registration of a disproportionately high number of international patents.
Articles and studies by University scholars appear frequently in prestigious scientific and academic journals, and their research has garnered them outstanding awards in Israel and abroad. Thus far, faculty and alumni have won seven Nobel Prizes, one Fields Medal (the Nobel Prize’s equivalent in mathematics), one Canada Gairdner International Award in biomedical science, and 14 Wolf Prizes.
The Hebrew University is particularly proud of its “Startup Nation” technology transfer company, Yissum, which ranks among the most productive and successful incubator frameworks in the world:
- Since its founding in 1964, Yissum has licensed over 530 technologies
- It registers more than 50 new patents each year
- Yissum generates $2 billion in revenues annually
HUJI offers comprehensive selection of Semester, one year, Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD degrees, as well as postdoc fellowships, internships and short-term programs. The teaching faculty consists of world-renowned experts in their fields, many of whom have won important prizes and awards.
Groundbreaking research
Since it was established more than 100 years ago, the Hebrew University has been at the lead of pioneering research in both the Social Sciences and the Natural Sciences. In fact, its first Board of Governors included none other than Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud; and no fewer than eight Nobel prizes and many other important awards have emanated from its halls.
Today, the university remains firmly committed to its role as a leader in multidisciplinary research, and it stands at the forefront of cutting-edge innovation and entrepreneurship in a large range of fields. Huji has over 100 research centers, with 3,800 research projects are in progress at any given time.
As befits a distinguished research institution with close ties to the international research community, Hebrew University brings together top researchers from all over the world. One-third of all doctoral candidates in Israel are enrolled at the Hebrew University and one-quarter of all the international postdoc fellows in Israel are affiliated with the University. It is also a spearhead in obtaining research grants from the European Research Council (ERC).
The Authority for Research and Development of the Hebrew University encourages and promotes all research activities on campus and provides ongoing support to research projects. To date, more than 10,000 patents have been registered by HUJI-affiliated researchers. The university encourages and facilitates technology transfer and supports the successful commercialization of innovations. It is therefore not surprising that the university has played such a prominent role in the development of Israel’s famous start-up ecosystem.
Vibrant International Community
Over 2,000 students from 90 countries study in Jerusalem every year and take advantage of the many short-term study opportunities offered by HUJI’s Rothberg International School. These include one-semester Study Abroad and Student Exchange programs, Hebrew ulpan courses and various internships. Students affiliated with Rothberg are part of a lively international community that enjoys stimulating academic curricula alongside a fascinating personal experience.
Our students immerse themselves in their studies and they also relish the opportunity to experience one of the most fascinating cities in the world. Jerusalem is overflowing with history, culture and religion, but it is also a beautiful modern capital with a diverse population and a vibrant nightlife.
